At just 13 years old, Afani* has endured more than most of us can imagine. When he was enrolled at Our Father’s Cleft (OFC) earlier this year, he carried more than just books into his Grade 4 classroom — he carried trauma, pain, and the remnants of war.
A year ago, Afani narrowly survived an aerial bombardment that destroyed his former school and took the lives of 14 people, including many of his classmates.
He shared, “Many of my beloved friends were killed and I almost died.”
In the bombing, he was severely injured, resulting in the amputation of part of his arm. For the past year, he also quietly lived with the pain of shrapnel embedded in his abdomen — until this month, when LUV’s team helped support him as he underwent a five-hour surgery to remove it.
Through it all, Afani holds tight to a dream because of who impact his life most this past year: “I want to be a doctor to treat sick people when I grow up.”

Despite the heartbreak, Afani is full of courage and gratitude.
Now, at OFC, Afani is receiving not only life-saving care but also the steady nourishment, education, and emotional support he needs to heal and grow.
Psalm 103:13 reminds us, “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.”
When you give, you’re stepping in to bind up the brokenhearted with love — reflecting the heart of our Heavenly Father who never turns away. Your gift can bring healing, safety, and a future to children recovering from war and exploitation.
Will you make a gift today to help protect and empower vulnerable children like Afani?
