From war-torn Sudan to the streets of Ohio, “Food is a fork-in-the-road decision maker. People will do unimaginable things to eat, and they shouldn’t have to,” shared Mandie Knight, a trafficking survivor in the USA.
That’s why we prioritize our school nutrition program and farming initiatives — they’re critical to meet both immediate and long-term nutritional needs by importing food and through expanding agriculture in the war-ravaged communities where we serve.
In a recent video from the UK Channel 4’s TV program Unreported World, the work of LUV in addressing food insecurity as a root cause to end human trafficking is portrayed in this powerful 1 minute clip with LUV’s indigenous director Ezekiel Ayub:
As shown in the video, Ahmed and his sister Shamia, rescued from a nearby refugee camp in Sudan, do not know if their parents are alive or dead, but they now have a safe space to heal, grow, and — with your continued help — receive all the things they need to flourish.
When asked about his experience, Ahmed powerfully shared, “It used to be so hard. My younger brothers really struggled. [But now I feel] I’m very comfortable here and happy too. I get to go to school, there’s something to eat. I’m now very content.”
- In Sudan, nearly 25 million people — half the population — are experiencing severe food insecurity.
- While in South Sudan, over 7 million people, or nearly 57% of the population, are projected to face crisis-level hunger.
Conflict, rising prices, water scarcity, and climate extremes continue to drive record hunger — and increasing rates of human trafficking.
