"The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? —Psalm 27:1

Ruth* is one of the shining examples of how students in our network first receive protection, grow through education, and then are launched into a thriving future — giving back to their communities as changemakers.

Ruth grew up in war-torn Nuba Mountains, where 54% of women living in Sudan’s poorest households were married before the age of 18.  That could have been her future — but God had another plan for her story.

In 2017, due to unforeseen circumstances in her extenuating family, she relocated with several of her siblings and her mother to our center along the border of Uganda.  During her time in our network, Ruth studied hard, grew in her faith, served in her community, and graduated with her high school diploma in 2020.  The following year, she joined our internship program and later received a LUV scholarship to attend a world-class teacher training program in South Sudan.

In 2024, Ruth graduated with an education degree and is now back serving as a teacher at the school that nurtured her journey.  It’s also the same location where her mother, Chadia, continues to serve with excellence as the head cook in the school kitchen.  Now, together, they are sharing God’s love as they pour into the next generation.

Reflecting on her journey, Ruth shares:

“The time I joined school I was so glad because it was a precious time I always wished to have. Life wasn’t easy, but by the grace of God I finished. Because of you, I have become someone great today. The biggest lesson I have learned about God (through this ministry) is that God answers prayers through sending his people to rescue others who are suffering. For example, your care through LUV helped me to reach where I am now. I will forever remain grateful for the service you rendered in my life. As I talk now, I am a teacher by profession. May God bless you abundantly.”

Ruth’s story reminds us that even in the darkest places, hope shines brightest. Her life — once vulnerable to poverty, loss and exploitation — is now filled with hope, purpose, and light. And that light is multiplying, as she gives back to the very community that first gave her hope.

Your generosity ignites that spark of change — a spark that grows into lasting light for families and communities for generations to come.
