In regions where armed conflict is a constant reality like Sudan and South Sudan, the ripple effects of violence go far beyond what meets the eye. One of the most devastating and often overlooked consequences of conflict is human trafficking.
At Lift Up the Vulnerable (LUV), we see this link firsthand. Conflict fuels instability. Instability grows desperation. In times of deep uncertainty, traffickers often take advantage of those searching for safety and stability.
The Hidden Link Between War and Trafficking
Conflict destabilizes communities, displaces families, and shatters already fragile support systems. Children are orphaned or separated from their caregivers. Schools are destroyed. Food and medical access become uncertain. In chaos, traffickers step in offering false promises of work, education, or protection.
Sudan and South Sudan, where LUV operates, are among the most vulnerable regions in the world. Decades of civil war, political unrest, and economic turmoil have left communities fractured and fragile. In these environments, young girls and boys are at high risk of being forced into labor and sexual exploitation.
According to the UN, nearly 12 million people in Sudan have been forcibly displaced due to conflict as of Dec 2025. Displacement often means children are on the move — alone, hungry, and without access to education or healthcare. These conditions are ideal for traffickers to exploit.
In Sudan and South Sudan, the risks are stark:
- 45.6% of children in South Sudan between the ages of 10–14 are engaged in child labor.
- 52% of girls in South Sudan and 54% of women in Sudan’s poorest households are married before age 18.
- 75% of school age kids in South Sudan and 90% of school age students in Sudan do not have access to an education — leaving them even more vulnerable.
- Both nations are classified as Tier 3 countries in the U.S. Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report — indicating governments that are not meeting the minimum standards to combat trafficking.
These aren’t just statistics — they’re indicators of extreme vulnerability. But this is not where the story has to end.
Prevention Is Possible, And It Starts With Protection
LUV’s mission is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: when you protect, educate, and empower vulnerable children and women, you break the cycle of exploitation before it begins.
We operate in regions that are often beyond the reach of traditional humanitarian aid, supporting a network of safe houses, schools, and medical clinics led entirely by local, indigenous leaders. These leaders are trusted members of their communities, and they’re at the front lines of change.
By offering safe shelter, consistent meals, education, and leadership training, LUV not only meets the immediate needs of at-risk children but also gives them the tools to thrive far beyond the reach of traffickers.
Education: The Most Powerful Tool Against Exploitation
In communities plagued by conflict, education becomes more than just a right, it becomes a shield. Every student who attends a LUV-supported school is one less child vulnerable to false promises and manipulation. Every life empowered with knowledge becomes an agent of transformation in their community.
In 2025:
- 1,446 students (682F/739M) were educated through LUV programs.
- More than 444 students engaged in leadership roles, community service, or mentorship.
- 25 alumni received university or trade school scholarships.
Education doesn’t just protect — it empowers.
